Electrofishing Services

– Methodology Overview

At BIOTA, we offer professional electrofishing services to assist in the comprehensive monitoring and sampling of freshwater fish populations. Our experienced team uses state-of-the-art electrofishing equipment to safely and efficiently collect data on fish species, abundance, and health.

Electrofishing is a highly effective and non-lethal method that allows us to sample fish from various habitats, including lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds. This method ensures minimal impact on the environment and the fish themselves, as all individuals are returned to their habitat after measurements and assessments are completed. All of the work is authorized by national authorities.

Why Choose Our Electrofishing Services?

  • Comprehensive Data Collection: We provide detailed reports on species diversity, population structure, and fish health.
  • Safe and Ethical: Our methods prioritize the well-being of aquatic life, ensuring that fish are safely handled and released back into their environment.
  • Certified Professionals: Our team is certified and trained in electrofishing techniques, ensuring precision and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Customizable Surveys: Whether you need a one-time assessment or ongoing monitoring, we offer flexible options tailored to your specific project needs.

Partner with us to gain valuable insights into the health of aquatic ecosystems and ensure sustainable management practices for freshwater habitats. Contact us today for more information or to schedule a consultation!

    Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)

Electrofishing is an essential tool in EIAs, providing accurate data on fish species composition, population density, and habitat use. This helps assess the potential impacts of development projects on aquatic ecosystems and inform mitigation strategies to minimize environmental disruption.

    Baseline Biodiversity Studies

Electrofishing allows for the collection of data on the diversity and abundance of fish species in a specific waterbody, creating a baseline that can be used to track changes over time. This is critical for long-term conservation planning and ecosystem management. This method is non selective, but does not harm the fish, which makes it perfect for research of endangered species or removal of invasive species.

    Water Quality Monitoring

Fish populations are sensitive indicators of water quality. Electrofishing helps monitor changes in fish health and species composition, which can signal shifts in water quality due to pollution, habitat degradation, or other environmental factors.

Fish Health Assessments and Stock Evaluations in Fisheries

Electrofishing is used to assess the health and condition of fish populations, providing data on size, weight, and species distribution. These assessments are vital in fisheries for managing fish stocks, ensuring sustainable fishing practices, and maintaining ecosystem balance.

Would you be interested in attending an electrofishing course?

Electric fishing is an effective way to sample freshwater fish populations. However, electric fishing may also cause fish injury or mortality. The purpose of this electrofishing course is to provide specific, concise guidance on choice of electric fishing equipment and correct adjustment of electrical output settings to achieve the optimum combinations of efficient fish capture and fish welfare under the range of environmental conditions encountered by operators of electric fishing equipment. The small electrofishing summary given in this document is intended as supplementary information to accompany the electric fishing course given orally by Dušan Jelić, Phd. For more detail, much more extensive Electric Fishing Manual will be provided to students after the course.

It should be remembered that electric fishing is not the only method for fish population evaluation or removal and these other methods (netting, trapping etc.) should be considered when deciding on the most appropriate method to be used.
Electrofishing courses are traditionally divides into:

    • BASIC ELECTROFISHING COURSE – 300 Eur
    • INTERMEDIATE ELECTROFISHING COURSE – 300 Eur
    • ADVANCED ELECTROFISHING COURSE – on request

    * The BASIC and INTERMEDIATE package costs 500 Eur per attendee.

With basic electrofishing course, person gets training in general principles of electrofishing and is able to organise field work using back pack or stationary electrofishing machine, and participate in electrofishing with heavy duty equipment like “boom boat”, under supervision of more experienced team leader (intermediate or advanced course).

Courses are typically held once per year for registered participants. The course is conducted either via ZOOM or in person, depending on the location of the enrolled participants.
